Rock armour is a method of coastal and riverbank protection, which involves the placement of larger pieces of angular or irregularly shaped rocks or stone along the shoreline or riverbank to absorb and disperse the energy of inflowing water and waves. This reduces the impact on underlying soil and structures. The size of rocks needed depend on the project requirements but must be large enough to withstand and resist movement from the force of water.

Rock armour is often used where there is a high risk of erosion or where there is significant wave action. It is a commonly employed technique in coastal engineering to protect infrastructure such as roads, buildings and ports as well as natural habitats.

It can also be used for riverbank stabilisation, helping to prevent the river from eroding the banks which could lead to widening the channel and loss of land or nearby structures and is an essential defence against flooding, helping to prevent damage caused by rapid flowing water.
