On 7th July, we held our annual Summer Pit Stop safety training day, where we stop production for the day and all of the staff come together to focus on health, safety & wellbeing.

GD Harries Summer Pit Stop 2023

Although stopping production is something we don’t do lightly, in our industry health and safety is so important and it is essential that we create the time to focus on it.

During the day we revied our core risks such as contact with moving plant & vehicles, falls from height and entrapment by machinery or moving parts.

Mind Pembrokeshire also ran group sessions, following our Mental Health Awareness campaign in May. Mind talked about mental health awareness, how to access help and information, what services are available and led group activities which we could participate in. The feedback was extremely positive, and the team found the presentation very valuable.

Having recently installed defibrillators at all our sites, we were also delighted to welcome Tenby & District first responders who provided training on the principals of CPR and how to use the defibrillators. We hope we never have to use them but if we do, we are prepared!

With the help of Rugbi Industrial Supplies we focussed on the importance of eye protection. Each person was fitted with specific eye protection suitable for their own face shape and needs. We were also supported by JE Lawrence & Son who provided machinery for practical demonstrations on machinery safety and pre-start checks.

While the whole team was together, we took the opportunity to update everyone on the how the business is performing and to share best practice within the group.

At the end of the day, we finished with a Group BBQ. Feedback was very positive with lots of suggestions for future training days. It was a valuable opportunity to review our own health and safety performance. GD Harries take health and safety seriously and these dedicated training sessions are an important part of managing the risks and ensuring we provide a safe working environment for the team.

The company would like to thank all involved for making the day so successful and also thank Narberth Rugby Football club for hosting the event and looking after us so well on the day.
